If you’re looking for a sweet finish to cakes, cupcakes or biscuits, icing is a quick and easy option. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make a shiny and delicious frosting that will make your treats shine. Read on for a simple icing recipe that you can make in minutes.

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Difficulty:

Ingredients

… for the normal icing:

250 g icing sugar

4 tbsp water

… for the thick icing:

250 g icing sugar

3 tablespoons water

… for the soft icing:

125 g icing sugar

3 tablespoons water

Preparation

  1. The basis for the basic icing recipe is icing sugar, which is mixed with more or less water to make a normal, thick or soft icing.
  2. It is important that the water is gradually stirred into the icing sugar, not the other way round!
  3. Place the icing sugar in a small bowl, add the specified amount of water – depending on the desired consistency – and stir until smooth.
  4. Then spread on cakes, tarts, biscuits or muffins or fill into a piping bag and pipe onto the baked goods.

TIP

One portion of icing is enough for 1 cake, 1 cupcake, 12 muffins or 1 baking tray full of biscuits or gingerbread.

Icing is usually made with icing sugar, as it dissolves more quickly and finely and forms a denser icing. It is best to sift the icing sugar beforehand so that no lumps form. If you do get lumps in the icing, simply stir them out with a little patience.
